Joseph P. Cipolla Sr., of Paramus, a former borough mayor instrumental in keeping the blue laws in Bergen County, died January 5, 1994. He was 67.

Mr. Cipolla served four terms as mayor from 1975 to 1990. He also served as councilman from1974 to 1975 and on the Paramus Bord of Education from 1973 to 1975.

In addition to his work with the blue laws, Mr. Cipolla was involved in the acquisition of the Paramus Golf and Country Club.  He also established the Paramus Senior Citizen Center, which was named after him a year ago.

"He wanted a place in town for seniors to gather and socialize," said his sone, Joseph P. Cipolla Jr. of Paramus.

Mr. Cipolla was also a candidate for freeholder and assemblyman.

A Lyndhurst native, he moved here in 1962.

Before his involvement in politics, Mr. Cipolla was a physical education teacher for the Lyndhurst Board of Educaition. He also was football coach at Lyndhurst High School, where he led the team to two state championships.

Mr. Cipolla was also and All-Skyline defensive end at Utah State.

"He loved listening to Frank Sinatra," said his son. "He loved collecting old records and being with people."

A World War II Army veteran, Mr. Cipolla was a member of Unico, Paramus Knights of Columbus, Paramus Benevolend Protective Order of Elks Lodge 2001, Paramus Democratic Club  and Bergen County Mayors Association.

In addition to his son, Mr. Cipollas is suvived by his wife, the former Doris Inglima; a daughter, Donna O'Brien of Ringwood; four sisters, Marie Girgenti and Rose Pascucci, both of Lyndhurst, Lucy Janelli of Lakehurst, Ocean County, and Annette Mennen of Paramus; and four grandchildren Larry, Joseph, Christopher, and Kaitlin O'Brien.
