Mrs. Jane Holmes

Mrs. Jane Holmes

January 9, 1920 - September 16, 2017

Jane Fraser Holmes, 97, longtime resident of Ridgewood, died peacefully in her home on September 16, 2017. Jane was predeceased by her beloved husband, Fred W. Holmes.

Jane was born in New York City, the second of five children, on January 9, 1920 to Frances and John A. Fraser.

After working in New York City, Jane attended the University of Alabama pledging the Alpha Phi Sorority and serving as its president. She graduated in 1946 with a major in physical education. She was a life-long fan of Alabama football; ROLL TIDE!

Over the course of her career spanning almost 20 years, Jane taught high school physical education in Leonia, Paramus, and Wood Ridge. While at Wood Ridge she established intramural programs for women.

In addition to her teaching career, Jane was a dedicated volunteer with the Girl Scouts, the YWCA, and the PTA. She was a long-time member of West Side Presbyterian Church, and the High Mountain Golf Club.

Jane always enjoyed a good bridge game, a tennis match, a full round of golf, and swimming. She was an accomplished seamstress, and enjoyed many other needle crafts as well.

Jane is survived by her four daughters, Susan Tell (William) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Barbara Walker (Jerry) of Richmond, Virginia; Sara Johnson (Charles) of Ridgewood, New Jersey; and Penny Vanata (David) of Wooster, Ohio.

She also leaves eleven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Donations to the American Red Cross, The American Heart Association or West Side Presbyterian Church in her name would be greatly appreciated.
