William Bernecker
August 11, 1949 - November 16, 2024
William Alfred Bernecker passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024 in Mooresville, N.C., after a long illness due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Bill was born on Aug. 11, 1949, in Teaneck, N.J. He grew up in Paramus and graduated from Paramus High School in 1968. He attended Monmouth University in Long Branch, N.J.
He spent many years living in the Lyme area of Connecticut and several towns in New Jersey, including Long Valley, Chester and Mendham. Wherever he lived, he could be found at the local pub enjoying a cocktail with his wife Mary and the many locals. Bill was exceptionally talented at renovating his many homes over the years, a hobby he thoroughly enjoyed.
Since he was a child, Bill had a love of classic cars, sailboats and dogs. His favorite pastime was sailing on Long Island Sound. As a teenager, he could be found working on cars and listening to the great music of the 1960’s. Bill attended Woodstock in ’69, but those details were always a bit “fuzzy.”
Bill had a long and successful career in the insurance industry. He began his career as a claim adjuster with Fireman’s Fund, then becoming the Vice President of Claims at Atlantic Mutual where he worked for over 20 years. He retired from AIG insurance in 2015.
Bill is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary (Kiernan) of Mooresville, N.C., and his two daughters, Amy Loeffler and her husband David of Chester, Christina Greenley of Long Valley, his five granddaughters, many extended family members, and lifelong friends.
He was predeceased by his son James in 2014, his parents, Conrad and Marjorie Bernecker, and his beloved dogs Zak, Willie and Cooper.
In memory of Bill, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association or to your local animal shelter would be greatly appreciated.
