Josephine Friedman, 85, of Stroudsburg, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 22, 2025 while under hospice care at Grace Park in Stroudsburg. She was the wife of Steven Friedman, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage.
Born on April 29, 1940 in New York, NY, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (D'Angelo) Prolizo and grew up in the Bronx, NY. As an adult, she lived in Fair Lawn, Paramus, and Elmwood Park, NJ and Coral Springs, FL before moving to Pennsylvania. She was a mathematics teacher having taught at Harriet Beecher Stowe Intermediate School in New York, Paramus High School and Rosa Parks High School of the Performing Arts (Paterson) in New Jersey and Spanish River High School in Boca Raton, FL. She was honored as teacher of the year in both New Jersey and Florida.
Josephine was a member of The Church of St. Luke in Stroudsburg, the West End Divas chapter of the Red Hat Society where she was the founder and "Queen Mum", the West End Democratic Club where she served as president, and the Monroe County Democratic Club. She was an avid reader and collector of classic mystery novels, and belonged to the Sherlock Holmes Society.
In addition to her husband, surviving are two daughters, Pamela Catalano of Clifton, NJ and Stephanie Friedman (and wife Miriam) of Chicago, IL; two granddaughters, Shira Friedman-Parks and Julia Friedman-Parks both of Chicago, IL; a brother, Philip Prolizo (and wife Donna) of Marietta, GA; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Krevens, and a brother, Carl Prolizo.
Entombment Laurelwood Cemetery in Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial remembrances be made to PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) or the Dementia Society of America.
