Mr. William H. Bill Smith

January 2, 1936 - February 17, 2025
William “Bill” was born in Hackensack, NJ and lived in NJ until his retirement in 1991. He then with his loving wife Barbara, moved to Stuart FL, for the last 34 years. In NJ, Bill was a history and drivers education teacher.
He attended Hackensack High School where he was an excellent athlete, playing basketball, football, and baseball, and along with his teammates won 13 championships. He personally won all league, all county, all state and 1 All American award. He then went on to play basketball for Muhlenberg College. His highlight there was to play in Madison Square Garden which was a childhood dream of his. He returned to NJ where he became a basketball coach for 25 years. His love of basketball and of his players was evident in every shared story. While coaching, he won 5 Coach of the Year awards and 5 League championships. He took pride in “doing it my way” as Frank Sinatra would say. He was also known for his great sense of humor.
In retirement, he enjoyed golf, sailing, and spending summers in ME enjoying lobster and oysters.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Bill is survived by his 2 sons, Bill and his wife Karen, Jeffery and his wife Jeannine, Denise Day and husband Jeff. He also has 2 grandchildren, Jessica Smith and Kelsey Samples and her husband Jeremy, and 2 great grandchildren, Liam and Olivia.
