Richard Egan - Class of 1966

Richard Egan
Richard Egan - Paramus High School Class of 1966

Rich passed away at age 75 but prior to his passing he contributed to this obituary because he felt the family would be too busy reading the will to write one. He was born in Brooklyn and at age 3 the family moved to Paramus, NJ. He graduated from Upsala College, earned several professional degrees, and worked on and off Wall Street for 50 years. He held many positions including being on the Board of Directors of a publicly traded company. After the passing of his father 31 years ago, he was the patriarch of the extended Egan family, where he was always available to help those in need.

He agreed with those who say there are two kinds of virtues: resume' virtues and eulogy virtues. The resume virtues list your achievements and gives you wealth, status, and success. These are certainly very important attributes. The other virtue is your eulogy virtue and that is what people say about you at your memorial service. After they bury you, probably everyone goes over to your house, eats potato salad on a paper plate and talks about the kind of person you were. Were you sensitive to other people's needs, did you love others, were you generous, kind, honest, faithful, did you show up in people's lives when they needed you? Those are the things that give life its worth and meaning. That is what is most important when we stand before God. Like most of us, God did sprinkle a good number of flaws on Rich at birth, but he tried to do good. Just the same, he will tell you that he was relying 100% on the cross of Jesus, his savior, for his redemption.

Rich was preceded in death by his sister Judy Quitne. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, his son Kevin, his daughter Kristin, his sister Eleanor, his brother Jack and wife Rose, his granddaughter, Jazlyn Lee Egan, as well as numerous nephews and nieces that he adores. Also surviving him is Diane Cottrell (dear friend), and Dr. Barbara Covadelli, (his hero). Rich also leaves behind wonderful, crazy, funny friends.
